Homeownership and Labor Time Allocation: Evidence from the Wealth Effect and Intergenerational Co-residence Mechanisms

Abstract:Using panel data from the China Family Panel Studies spanning 2014 to 2022, this paper examines the impact of homeownership on residents’ labor time allocation and its underlying mechanisms. The empirical results indicate that homeownership significantly crowds out working hours and total labor hours while increasing time spent on housework. This phenomenon is primarily driven by two mechanisms: the housing wealth effect, which reduces labor supply in the market, and intergenerational co-residence, which creates rigid demands for domestic labor. Heterogeneity analysis reveals that the structural adjustment of “less work, more housework” induced by homeownership is more pronounced among females. Furthermore, the effects are significantly stronger for residents with rural hukou, lower educational attainment or co-reside with children, and those who are married. Further analysis demonstrates that owning multiple properties further reduces work and total labor hours but has no significant impact on housework hours. Consequently, this paper suggests strengthening the synergy between housing and labor market policies, promoting the socialization of domestic work, and advancing the equalization of public services to ensure efficient labor time allocation for residents.
